Louvered caps
Several slats that lift with airflow and drop shut. They have a low profile on brick, but the slats can collect lint and stick if the vent isn’t cleaned.
A cracked flap or painted-shut louver lets pests in and holds lint back. Compare free, no-obligation quotes from independent local companies for a code-compliant damper cap.

The cap on the outside wall or roof is the last few inches of your dryer vent, and it does more than it looks. It lets exhaust out, closes when the dryer stops so outside air, rain and pests stay out, and should never hold lint back. When it fails, the whole vent suffers.

The International Residential Code, which Alabama has adopted with amendments, says dryer exhaust terminations “shall be equipped with a backdraft damper.” A damper is any flap or louver that opens with airflow and closes when the dryer stops. Common styles:
Several slats that lift with airflow and drop shut. They have a low profile on brick, but the slats can collect lint and stick if the vent isn’t cleaned.
One hinged flap under a hood. Simple and easy to inspect. A weak or warped flap can stay partly open.
Caps made for roof terminations, with a damper and enough opening for dryer exhaust. A general roof vent cap is not necessarily designed for a dryer, so ask what is being installed.
Whatever the style, ask for a cap made for dryer exhaust that matches your 4-inch duct, closes fully when the dryer is off, and doesn’t restrict airflow. The 2021 edition of the IRC also adds a requirement on the size of the outlet and passageway, so a replacement should not narrow the opening.
Plenty of vent covers sold online come with a screen or “critter” mesh. The IRC is direct on this: “Screens shall not be installed at the duct termination.” Mesh catches lint, the lint builds up, and the outlet slowly closes off. That restricts airflow, which the CPSC says can cause excessive heat build-up and, in some dryers, a fire.
If your current cover has a screen, replacing it with a proper damper cap is the code-compliant fix. To keep birds and pests out, rely on a damper that closes fully plus regular dryer vent cleaning. If birds have already moved in, see bird nest removal first, because the species matters before a nest is removed.
Location matters as much as the cap itself. The IRC says the exhaust duct must terminate on the outside of the building. If the dryer manufacturer’s instructions don’t specify a termination location, the duct “shall terminate not less than 3 feet in any direction from openings into buildings.” That means windows, doors and other openings that could let moist, lint-laden exhaust back inside.
A like-for-like cap swap usually keeps the existing location. If the old vent sits too close to a window or door, or exits into a crawl space, garage or soffit instead of outside, a technician may suggest moving it. That becomes a reroute; see dryer vent repair and replacement. For a new vent route through a wall or the roof, check with your city’s permit office.
A technician will typically remove the old hood and check how the duct connects behind it. A loose or disconnected duct at the wall is a common find.
Lint behind the old cap is cleared, and many homeowners pair the job with a full cleaning.
The new damper cap is connected to the duct and fastened to the wall, whether brick, vinyl siding or another surface, then sealed around the edges.
With the dryer running, the damper should open fully; with it off, it should close.
Many older homes in Birmingham, Bessemer, Homewood and Mountain Brook, where most houses were built before 1980 according to Census ACS estimates, may have vent covers that have been on the wall for many years and are worth checking. Roof caps take extra access; see roof and second-story dryer vents.
We don’t publish a price for vent cover or cap replacement because we haven’t found a reliable source for one. Cost depends on the cap style, wall or roof location, how the duct connects behind it, and whether cleaning or repair is needed at the same time. For related services, see the dryer vent cleaning cost guide. The easiest way to get a real number is to request a free quote with a photo of your current vent cover.
No. The International Residential Code says screens shall not be installed at the dryer duct termination. Screens and mesh catch lint, which builds up and blocks airflow. The code requires a backdraft damper instead. A cap with a flap or louvers that closes fully when the dryer is off is the code-compliant way to keep pests out.
If the dryer manufacturer's instructions don't specify a termination location, the International Residential Code says the exhaust duct must end at least 3 feet in any direction from openings into the building, such as windows and doors. Check your dryer's manual and ask the company whether the existing location meets that rule before replacing the cap.
Common causes are lint packed around the hinge or louvers, a warped or cracked flap, paint on the louvers, or a nest behind the cover. Weak airflow from a clogged duct can also leave the flap barely moving. Cleaning the vent often helps. If the flap is damaged or painted shut, replacing the cap is usually the fix.
It should. The IRC calls for a 4-inch nominal metal exhaust duct, and the 2021 edition adds rules on the size of the outlet and passageway. A replacement cap made for dryer exhaust that fits the 4-inch duct without narrowing the opening helps keep airflow strong and lint moving out of the vent.
Some homeowners do, especially on a reachable first-floor wall. The tricky parts are connecting the duct securely behind the cover, sealing it to brick or siding, and choosing a damper cap without a screen. Roof caps and second-story walls involve ladders and roof access, which is a good reason to get a quote from a local company.
